CONFIDENT
A L.

Sir,
THE IC OCT 12
GOVERNMENT HOUSE.
HONGKONG. 10th. September, 1912.
40%/29194
With reference to my telegram of the 2uth.
ultimo, I have the honour to transit copy of notes of a conversa-
-tion which I had with representatives of the Chamber of Commerce
and tite Peninsular and Oriental Steam lavigation Company on the
subject of the proposed Commercial Radiotelegraphic Station at
Hongkong.
2.
It appears that the reason for the desire for
a Medium Pover Installation with a renge of 50 miles by day are
(a) that vessels by be in communication with llongong or Singa- -pore diroughout the whole voyage between those ports and (b) that revenue may be lade by exchange of messages with other Radiotele- -raphic Stations on land. I am given to understand that this
latter consideration was encouraged by Lessrs. Marconi's representa -tive, who said that if e Redium Power Station were erected in Hongkong his Company would endeavour to have a station of corres- -ponding range installed at Shangai.
3.
The Postmaster-General, vino nas a aber of
the Committee whose report formed enclosure 1 in Er. Severn's
1/62 Confidential Despatch of the 15th. April, inforuse the Committee
were influenced in recommending a Ledium Power Station by the fact that at that time the privilege of installing a Low Power Station had been promised to the Eastern Extension Tele_raph Company.
RIGHT HONOURABLE
LEWIS HARCOURT, M.P.,
&C.,
GC.,
80.
